Schlüchtern – After seven years of planning and construction, the Main-Kinzig district has completed the comprehensive reconstruction and renovation of the city school in Schlüchtern in two construction phases. A total of 23 million euros went into the major project, which transformed the secondary school into a modern education center.
“This major investment is a commitment to the school location and strengthens secondary and secondary school education. The result is impressive,” explained district councilor and head of school Jannik Marquart (CDU) at the inauguration ceremony. He thanked everyone involved for their patience during the construction phase and their willingness to continually adapt to new circumstances.
Schlüchtern City School inaugurated after seven years of construction
“A project like this can only be successful if everyone pulls together,” he emphasized. The main building was almost stripped back to its shell and given a completely new, functional floor plan. An outer shell made of wood now characterizes the appearance, e.gThe building is also barrier-free accessible.
Technology and fire protection are state-of-the-art. “So we are basically dealing with a new building here, as the entire interior has been realigned and completely rebuilt – entirely according to the needs of the city school,” says Marquart. District Administrator Thorsten Stolz (SPD) also praised the result.
“The city school can now offer an absolutely modern and highly attractive learning environment,” he said. The Main-Kinzig district has been a reliable partner for its school locations for years. In Schlüchtern alone, 32 million euros have been spent in recent years. A total of 360 million euros would flow into education across the district in the coming years.
“We are making our schools fit for all-day use and bringing them up to date with the latest technology,” announced the district administrator. All companies and craft businesses commissioned with the construction come from the region. The construction management was carried out by the architecture firm T2 from Biebergemünd. Architect Timo Trageser pointed out that rooms in schools increasingly act as a kind of third educator – by creating a good environment for learning and growing.
Headmaster draws positive conclusions after renovation work
Headmaster Andreas Leibold drew a positive conclusion after seven years: “The wait and the restrictions were worth it.” The new rooms would have a direct positive and relaxing effect on the people who stay in them. This is clearly noticeable among the students, but also among the staff.
The modernized city school now has attractively designed classrooms as well as specialist rooms for chemistry, biology, physics and music. There are also rooms for the polytechnic area with art, works and textiles as well as a teaching kitchen with a dining room. A student library with a learning workshop, a PC room and a teaching material library with a student stay complete the offering.
Teachers also received more space for lesson preparation and meetings. A cafeteria as a central component of the all-day offering was completed alongside the specialist rooms in the first construction phase. Mayor Matthias Möller announced that the schoolyard would be redesigned and greened through the Hessian “Living Centers” funding program.
The grant for this amounts to 1.3 million euros. The inauguration ceremony was accompanied musically by the city school's big band under the direction of Steffen Reus. The topping-out ceremony took place in September 2020 for a complete fire protection renovation of the first construction phase at the city school in Schlüchtern.
