Five Italians die in a diving accident in the Maldives. The search for their bodies continues – and another misfortune follows: A rescue diver from the Maldivian military dies while trying to find the drowned people.
The search for the bodies of drowned divers from Italy has cost the life of a rescue diver in the Maldives. The Maldivian National Defense Force (MNDF) man was rushed to hospital and died after taking part in a search operation. The aim of the search operation was to locate the four bodies of the still missing Italians in an underwater cave in the Vaavu Atoll, as the Italian news agency Ansa reported, citing Maldivian sources.
A total of five Italians died in a diving accident on Thursday. One body has already been recovered, and the search for the other four bodies has been going on for several days. The exact cause of the accident and the cause of death of the five Italians remain the subject of investigations by local authorities.
The Maldives is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka. The islands of the archipelago attract many international holidaymakers with their idyllic white sandy beaches. The Maldives and their coral reefs are also a popular destination for snorkelers and divers from abroad.
According to the Italian Foreign Ministry, the five Italians – including a marine biologist and a diving instructor – explored a cave with several chambers connected by narrow passages at a depth of about 50 meters. According to media reports, the group was only allowed to dive to a depth of around 30 meters. A special permit is required for deeper dives in the Maldives, which the diving group apparently did not have.
