There is no hope for the missing hikers.
Two mountain hikers, a US citizen from Germany (24) and an Austrian (23), initially disappeared without a trace in the Sella Chianzutan area. Rescuers fought their way through the steep slopes on foot and by helicopter. They wanted to find the young men in time. On Saturday (May 16th) there was certainty: the holidaymakers were dead, as orf.at reported. Their bodies lay in a mountainous area in the municipality of Verzegnis (Udine province).
What then began was a race against weather and time. Around 20 mountain and cave rescue teams, the police and the fire department combed the mountains around Verzegnis (Udine) on Friday (May 15th). They followed path 811 from Sella Chianzutan, checked possible shelters and climbed to the summits of Monte Bottai and Monte Piombada. At the same time, another team searched for the missing hikers along trail 827.
But all efforts are in vain in the end. The bodies of the Austrian (2) and his companion, a US citizen living in Germany, were found today (May 16) by a Friulian Civil Defense helicopter in a mountainous area in the municipality of Verzegnis (Udine province), between the Piombada and Bottai mountains. The two men fell to their deaths on a very steep site.
