The New Obertor construction project is taking shape in Schlüchtern: from the end of May, shops, municipal offices and a boarding hotel will gradually open there.

Schlüchtern – The construction project New Obertor on the former Langer site in Schlüchtern is entering the home stretch: the first shops are scheduled to open there at the end of May, followed by municipal departments at the beginning of June. As the city of Schlüchtern announces, the post office and the tourist information office will move into the ground floor, while the new boarding hotel will begin operations on the third floor – all three areas will be operated by the Schlüchtern Urban Development Company (SEG).

First up is the post office: it will move into the ground floor on Thursday, May 21st and will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. More shops will follow on Thursday, May 28th – a bakery, a clothing store and an optician. The tourist information office will begin operations on the ground floor on Wednesday, June 3rd and will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. According to the announcement, the renovation work on Obertorstrasse should be completely completed by this date. The intersection with Grabenstrasse is currently being paved to give the New Obertor a square feel. Mayor Matthias Möller says: “This will give the area a worthy setting.”

The public order administration and the family, culture and tourism department of the city of Schlüchtern will follow at the beginning of June. Due to the move, both offices will be closed on Friday, June 5th and Monday, June 8th. From Tuesday, June 9th, they will be open again at Obertorstrasse 39-41 – the part of the building on the right when you look at the Neue Obertor from Grabenstrasse. The opening times remain the same: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The city administration's postal address remains at Krämerstrasse 2. “Our inbox is centralized to create synergies, and we won't change that,” emphasizes Möller.

The mayor is impressed by the speed of construction: “The Werner Group is making great progress with the work, I'm really impressed by the speed of construction. I'm looking forward to the move, which will allow us to offer our city services in a more modern and citizen-friendly way.”

The regulatory administration includes the areas of residents' registration office including passport applications, escape and asylum, cemetery administration, trade office, social services, city police and road traffic. Manager Tanja Mittag points out that citizens should take the upcoming move into account when making their applications: “Especially when it comes to a passport for a trip, it should be applied for early. There are no express fees or the creation might not work in time for the planned trip.”

The area for family, culture and tourism includes the areas of child day care, seniors and youth, culture and tourism, markets and festivals as well as associations and voluntary work. Head of department Kerstin Baier-Hildebrand points out that there may be restrictions in the first few days due to the move and the commissioning of the IT system infrastructure. “We are in good spirits that everything will work out, but we ask the citizens for a little understanding and patience, especially in the first few days after the move,” she says.

Also in June, the Hotel Neue Mitte, which is also operated by SEG Schlüchtern, opened on the third floor. The total of ten rooms each have a small kitchenette and are also suitable for longer stays; Bookings can only be made online. SEG managing director Christof Weisenborn says: “This takes us one step further with our mission to further develop Schlüchtern and the districts in an attractive and sustainable manner for tourism.”
