Hiking boots on and off: rangers invite you to free guided tours of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve from April – every Friday until October.

Rhön – Get out of everyday life and into nature: under the motto “Hiking boots on and off!” Biosphere rangers and certified nature and landscape guides are once again offering regular, free discovery tours in the Hessian part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The tours start on Friday (April 3rd) and take place every Friday at 2 p.m. until October 30th. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.

For many years, the guided tours have been an integral part of the annual calendar of many nature enthusiasts. With their extensive knowledge of flora, fauna, geology and the cultural history of the Rhön, the experts create a varied and at the same time educational program from Easter to October.

The destinations of the tours are as diverse as the landscape of the biosphere reserve itself. The program includes, among other things, the impressive core zones around Schafstein and Wasserkuppe, the Soisberg as the highest mountain and “king” of the Hessian bowling game, the legendary Dreienberg, the picturesque Guckaisee and the mystical Red Moor.

Each tour opens up new perspectives on the nature and history of this special region and makes the special features of the biosphere reserve directly tangible. The reserve recently celebrated its 35th anniversary.

The first tour on Good Friday takes you to the Ulmenstein extra tour in the idyllic Nüsttal together with ranger Arnold Will. The varied hike runs through dense forest passages and along a variety of paths and has a special highlight to offer in the form of the quiet basalt lake Ulmenstein. The lake is picturesquely surrounded by bizarre basalt columns. Two charmingly located chapels with magnificent furnishings as well as wide views over the Nüsttal and the Rhön hills make the tour a special natural and cultural experience.

A flyer has been published to accompany the series of events, offering a compact overview of all tours. According to information from the Hessian administrative office of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve, it is on the biosphere reserve's homepage biosphaerenreservat-rhoen.de ready for download. The flyer is available in printed form in the Hessian administration office in Hilders, in the Fulda district office, in the Rhön competence center on the Wasserkuppe and in the tourist information offices of the municipalities.

The complete program of guided tours up to and including October 30th as well as many other events in Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia can be found on the official website of the biosphere reserve in the “Events” section. All information about the required registration is also stored there.

If you prefer to explore the Rhön on your own, you can also discover the UNESCO biosphere reserve using the app. With the official “Rhön Biosphere Reserve” app, the cross-border protected area can be accessed conveniently and digitally. A 3D map offers tour and excursion tips, and a routing tool records hiking and cycling routes. The app also provides information about Rhön nature, behavioral tips and a “virtual panorama” for an all-round view – even in offline mode. As the administration reports, the app is free, ad-free and available for iPhones and Android devices in the app stores. (jkl)
