Overall crime in the district of the Southeast Hesse police headquarters increased slightly by 3.2 percentage points in 2025 compared to 2024. Police Vice President Anja Wetz explained this when presenting the crime statistics.

The Vice President also pointed out that the basic numbers had changed because of the census and that the increase in crime was actually lower. In Hanau, crimes increased by 3.8 percentage points. There were 7,043 crimes there last year.
Number of crimes in the Main-Kinzig district increased slightly in 2025
The number of burglaries in apartments rose by almost 37 points across the district in 2025. Marco Weller, head of the operations department, gave possible reasons for the increase. Suspects have already been identified, including a gang from the Frankfurt area. Because of the numerous commuters from the Main-Kinzig district and fewer home offices after the pandemic, the burglars have free rein during the day.
Shoplifting, grand theft and street crime have decreased in the district, the latter by eight percentage points. In Hanau there was a decrease of a good five points, which the representatives of the police headquarters attribute to increased controls and video protection systems at Freiheitsplatz and Marktplatz in Hanau. However, Marco Weller was concerned that bodily harm crimes – which have increased by around a quarter in Hanau and by a fifth in the Main-Kinzig district despite all controls – In addition to knives, stimulants are also increasingly being used. Pepper guns and pepper spray are legal to purchase, but may not be used against people.
The number of cases of domestic violence in the entire service district, which also includes the city and district of Offenbach, reached a higher value again: 1,628 cases. 82 percent of the victims are women. In Hanau there were 252 cases (plus 40 compared to 2024), in the Main-Kinzig district there were 435 cases (plus 125). The deputy head of the criminal directorate, Alexandra Schmitt, justifies this with increased awareness among people, an educational campaign and a greater willingness of victims to report.
Special focus on child pornography and sexual abuse
Schmitt said her agency has a particular focus on the area of child pornography and child sexual abuse. According to their information, in Kinzigtal the number of reported cases of abuse rose from 61 to 65, while the number of child pornography cases identified fell. In the district, this is a reduction from 212 to 160 cases, in Hanau from 89 to 54. The clearance rate for sexual abuse is 87.7 percent, as there is usually a connection between perpetrator and victim. With a clearance rate of almost 91 percent for the distribution, acquisition and possession of child pornographic content, “almost all of these acts were attributed to at least one suspect”. Almost all perpetrators would be brought out of anonymity.
“Violence against emergency services” has also been listed separately for several years. Of these, there were 131 offenses in the previous year compared to 89 in 2024 and 100 in the year before that. Rescue workers were approached in eight cases in the 2025 reporting year (in previous years there were two and four cases in the district), and in three cases firefighters were the target for the first time. In the city of Hanau, the police were the target of violence in 87 cases, rescue workers in two cases and the fire brigade in one case, also for the first time. “Crimes against life” is the name of a section in the PKS, which primarily covers homicides. “Completed” means the worst outcome. There were four cases of this last year between Sinntal and Maintal. There were six cases in 2024 and ten cases in 2023. Including the attempted killings, there were 13 cases last year (after 12 cases in 2024 and also 13 cases in 2023). In the city of Hanau alone there were five acts of violence against life in 2025, one of which resulted in death.
20 percent more cases of brawling and predatory extortion
In the offense group of robbery and extortion, an increase of a good 20 percent to 65 cases was registered last year. There were already 69 and 67 cases here in 2023 and 2022. According to the partial legalization of cannabis in 2024 there has been a further decline in drug-related crime. While there were between 666 and 764 registered offenses between 2019 and 2023, the number fell from 336 in the year of legalization to 209 in the reporting year.
Internet crime in the Main-Kinzig district has continued to rise from 1,156 to 1,248 offenses in 2025. In addition to fraud, this also includes insults and hate speech. Politically motivated crime also increased last year, partly due to the federal election and partly due to violence from the left during police operations. Of the 643 crimes, 109 are assigned to the left spectrum, 52 to foreign ideology and 9 to religious ideology. According to the police, in 242 acts the violence probably came from the right; 231 could not have been clearly assigned.
