Lousy scam!Landlord wants to kick out tenants – is that the reason?
“The fact that we don’t have heating is what’s getting on our nerves at the moment.”
Matthias Heider and Hanna Ständker have been living without heating or warm water for months. They contacted the landlord several times – no response. He suspects that the tenants' gas was deliberately turned off. In the video we go looking for clues and actually find them.
Berlin tenants are stuck without heating or hot water
When we visit Matthias Heider and Hanna Ständker in their Berlin apartment, we quickly notice: it is actually cold. Very cold. The thermometer in the kitchen shows just eleven degrees. In addition, there is no warm water and the power supply is slowly causing problems. The two of them got so-called warming plates to combat the cold. If these are in operation, the fuses may blow out when using other electronic devices.
Reading tip: Without heating for months – tenants in Duisburg are desperate
The two have been living in the bitter cold for months. A court even issued an interim injunction against the landlord. But even this request to turn the gas back on had no effect. What's behind it?
Overpriced holiday apartments instead of long-term rentals?
Everything changed with the sale ten years ago. “Since our current landlord bought the house, the rent has been aggressively rented out and people have almost been forced out of the house with lawsuits,” explains Matthias Heider. As far as he knows, there are still three permanent tenants and the rest of the house consists of holiday apartments and short-term rentals.

In fact, during our “Point 12” research, we became aware of advertisements that offered holiday apartments in the house in question – and for horrendous sums of money. Is that even legal? And how does the landlord react when we confront him about it? The answers are in the video above.
