Rare highlight: On Saturday, the 2007 handball world champions will play in a charity game in Rotenburg/Fulda for a good cause. Also there: Marco Kemmerzell from Petersberg and Lars Matthiesen from Fulda.
Rotenburg/Fulda – “Of course,” says Lars Matthiesen, “you are excited. After all, you don’t experience a game like this every day. But the anticipation outweighs it.” The 38-year-old, who played in the region for SG Hainzell, TV Flieden and Hünfelder SV and ended his career last yearis facing an unexpected highlight after his active career.
Handball world champion from 2007 for charity game in East Hesse
This Saturday (7 p.m.) the former backfield right will be taking part in the handball charity game in the Göbel Hotels Arena in Rotenburg an der Fulda. On the table there is a regional selection, which also includes Marco Kemmerzell from Petersberg, and an all-star team – and that can boast big names.
The 2007 world champions Christian “Blacky” Schwarzer, Christian Zeitz, Henning Fritz, Carsten Lichtlein and Lars Kaufmann as well as the 2016 European champion Tobias Reichmann will be there. Roberto Garcia Parrondo, coach of the North Hesse Bundesliga club MT Melsungen, is also part of the squad, as is former German international Manuel Späth and former Spanish international Isaías Guardiola, who now works as an assistant coach in Melsungen.
For Matthiesen it is the second time that he has been able to compete with world champions. When the 1978 heroes did the honors in Großenlüder many years ago, the Fulda native was also there. Now the opponents are a few years younger and some of them ended their careers not that long ago. “I just want to enjoy the game, but a goal like that against Henning Fritz would be cool,” says Matthiesen and smiles. A third player from the region should have been there, Kevin Houston (Hünfelder SV), but the former left winger tore his Achilles tendon during a joint training session. The game is sold out with around 2,000 spectators. The proceeds go to social causes.
