The Fulda Bishop Dr. Michael Gerber awarded 28 teachers the “Missio Canonica” – the church requirement for Catholic religious education in the Diocese of Fulda.
Fulda – Without the “Missio canonica”, in German “canonical mission”, teachers are not allowed to teach religious education in public schools or in independent schools in the diocese of Fulda. In a solemn service in the chapel of the Bonifatiushaus, Bishop Michael granted Gerber the ecclesiastical license to teach, the diocese announced. The award takes place after successful studies and traineeship as part of a study day.
In his homily, Bishop Gerber encouraged the newly commissioned teachers to be “salt of the earth and light of the world.” They should bring the Christian message into their teaching with confidence, responsibility and empathy.

The study day also offered the teachers the opportunity to exchange ideas directly with the bishop. They discussed various topics: the future of religious education, the connection between pastoral care and schools, and the value of Catholic schools.
In the conversation, the bishop emphasized the special importance of religious education today. It's about making young people experience faith as a resource. Faith offers a perspective on life and helps to clarify one's own mission. Especially in view of the diverse experiences of loss, he can show how personal and social challenges can be dealt with constructively.
The participants also reflected on what they personally associate with the “Missio Canonica”. The focus was on the question of how religious education can be successful today. The study day was organized by the Religious Education Department under the direction of Jan Kremer.
In addition In February, the diocese of Fulda began the basic renovation of the historic seminar and lecture hall building of the former theological faculty. The Catholic Academy is to move there.
