This short question could soon be answered at the bakery or supermarket. At least when it comes to so-called small amounts under 30 euros. Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) would like to abolish the law on the receipt requirement that was passed just over six years ago.
Obligatory receipts are intended to prevent tax fraud
Useless paperwork or important receipts? Receipts are intended to prevent tax fraud in companies without an electronic cash register system. But in reality it often ends in a flood of paper that customers take with them as a courtesy at best. Or simply ignore its offered existence, whereupon the seller secretly and quietly disposes of the receipt in the trash.

On January 1, 2020, the receipt requirement (in official German “general document issuing obligation”) was introduced. The result is paper waste in the “extra heavy” category and smaller businesses in particular, such as bakers, butchers or kiosks, have to this day parked the famous shelf P (the wastebasket) right below the cash register.

Alternative to paper receipts
In the long term, a digital alternative to the receipt will be introduced. Anyone who uses customer apps from supermarkets or Payback can now view the receipt in the app directly after shopping. The Reuters news agency writes that a QR code will also be possible in the future as a replacement for a receipt. Customers could access this if necessary.

The Ministry of Finance would like to require larger companies to use electronic systems from 2027. These are more secure against manipulation. The change is expected to cost around 99 million euros. In contrast, there is an annual relief of around 89 million euros through the introduction of digital receipts. The abolition of the receipt requirement for smaller amounts would definitely benefit the environment.
