The heart surgeon Dr. Christian Sellin was the first doctor to complete his habilitation at the Fulda campus, thereby setting a milestone for the clinic.
Fulda – With the inaugural lecture by Priv.-Doz. Dr. Christian Sellin, the scientific development of the Fulda Clinic reaches a new level of quality. He has succeeded in completely anchoring the entire scientific value chain at the Fulda location – from the conception of the studies to the publication of the results. The special event was celebrated on the campus floor of the clinic in the presence of numerous guests, companions and the family of the habilitation candidate.
First habilitation candidate from the Fulda campus ceremoniously farewelled
“For a long time, cutting-edge research and academic qualifications at the highest level were exclusively reserved for large, traditional universities. Dr. Sellin's work makes it clear that the Fulda campus is on the right path,” explained Priv.-Doz. Dr. Thomas Menzel, spokesman for the board of the Fulda Clinic, in his welcoming speech. With a wink he added that Dr. Sellin could claim the title of “first habilitation candidate” on the Fulda campus “forever”.
Prof. Dr. Hilmar Dörge, director of the Clinic for Cardiothoracic Surgery and mentor of the newly qualified professor, described his impressive career in a personal laudatory speech. He described Dr. Sellin is an exceptional talent who is characterized by precision, strategic thinking and enormous endurance. The shared path led from Göttingen to Fulda and was characterized by hard clinical work combined with scientific depth. Dörge particularly emphasized Sellin's innovative strength, who played a key role in establishing the Fulda Clinic as a leading center for minimally invasive heart surgery.
The dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Philipps University of Marburg, Prof. Dr. Michael Hertl, congratulated via video message and underlined the excellent cooperation between Marburg and Fulda, which is not least reflected in this habilitation.
Dr. Sellin gives the inaugural lecture on modern coronary bypass surgery
The focus of the academic celebration was the inaugural lecture itself. Dr. Sellin spoke about modern coronary bypass surgery while protecting the sternum. Minimally invasive, sternotomy-free coronary surgery – TCRAT for short – represents the essence of years of clinical innovation, explained the heart surgeon. The aim is to enable patients to have a complete reconstruction of the coronary arteries without having to endure the trauma of a sternum transection.
The data presented by Sellin prove that this method is at least equal to classic surgery in terms of patient recovery and the function of the lungs and kidneys. Around 80 percent of all bypass operations in Fulda are now carried out minimally invasively, and more than 1,000 patients have already been successfully treated.
With the ceremonial awarding of the “Venia Legendi”, the license to teach, Dr. Sellin now joins the circle of university professors. The evening ended on the roof terrace of the clinic, where the guests celebrated the first “homemade” habilitation candidate. Dr. Sellin himself is optimistic about the future: He wants to continually develop cardiac surgery for the benefit of patients and train young scientists in Fulda with the same passion that has shaped his own path.
In addition, the Fulda Clinic only recently A new type of defibrillator system was implanted that does not require direct heart contact. The system is intended to protect patients even better in the future.
