During his surprise visit to Kiev, Prince Harry appeals to the USA to show leadership. US President Donald Trump obviously doesn't like the subtle criticism at all. He reacts with mocking comments about Harry – and his wife.
Donald Trump and Prince Harry will probably no longer be friends in this life. The US President has now taken another unobjective swipe at the Royal – just a few days before he receives King Charles, the prince's father, in the White House.
The reason for this was the surprise visit that Prince Harry paid to Kiev on Thursday. Speaking at a security conference in the Ukrainian capital, the 41-year-old said the US should “demonstrate that it can fulfill its international treaty obligations – not out of charity, but because of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”
Harry also called on the US to play a crucial role in ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “This is a moment for American leadership,” he said.
The royal did not mention Trump by name in this context. It is of course obvious that his comments were aimed at the incumbent US administration.
This has not gone unnoticed by the US President. When asked about it in the Oval Office, he scoffed: “Prince Harry? How is he? How is his wife? Please give her my regards.” And further: “One thing I know: Prince Harry doesn't speak for Great Britain, that's for sure. I think I speak more for Great Britain than Prince Harry.” He sarcastically added that he “very much” appreciated Prince Harry’s advice.
Prince Harry's unannounced trip to Ukraine came a few days after his departure from Australia. He and his wife, Duchess Meghan, traveled there privately. Both are no longer active members of the British royal family.
Trump's anticipation of the visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla, who will be in the US from Monday, does not appear to have been dampened by Harry's comments: “He's a friend of mine. We're really looking forward to it. We've spoken to each other and we're going to have a great time,” Trump said of the monarch.
The feud between Trump on the one hand and Harry and Meghan on the other has been raging for years. For example, after Meghan supported the Democrats in the last presidential election campaign, Trump blasphemed in an interview with moderator Piers Morgan: “Harry is a man under the henpecked man like I've never seen him before.” He is “not a fan of Meghan. I think poor Harry is being fooled.”
For a while there was even speculation that Trump wanted to deport Harry, who lived with his wife in the USA, before the US President publicly denied this – but not without a dig at Meghan: “He has enough problems with his wife. She's terrible.”
At the end of 2025, Harry made a comeback on Stephen Colbert's “Late Show”. In one skit, he explained that he knew Americans were “obsessed with royalty.” When Colbert tried to argue, the Duke of Sussex joked: “Really? I heard you chose a king.”
