Vogelsberg/Fulda – A senior citizen from Vogelsberg fell victim to a shock call on Wednesday afternoon (March 18th). The woman later handed over a large sum of cash to an unknown person in Fulda. The police are now looking for witnesses.
Fraudsters steal cash from a senior citizen with a shock call
The scam began around 3 p.m. when the woman's phone rang, police said. The callers made her believe that her daughter had caused a fatal traffic accident. In order to avoid a prison sentence, bail must now be paid. The senior citizen believed the fraudsters and made her way to Fulda to hand over the supposed deposit.
At around 6:45 p.m. she gave the money to a person she didn't know on Weimarer Strasse in Fulda. The woman described the person who picked up the car as a male with a southern appearance, around 30 to 40 years old, of normal stature with a round face. He wore a baseball cap, glasses and was dressed in dark clothing.
The criminal police are now asking for information from witnesses: Who made suspicious observations in the area of Weimarer Strasse or the surrounding streets between 6 and 7 p.m.? Has anyone been making suspicious phone calls or have vehicles waiting with someone else's license plate number?
The police warn urgently against trick fraud and give the following advice: You should be suspicious if someone on the phone does not introduce themselves by name or pretend to be an acquaintance, relative, bank employee, police officer or person in the judiciary. You should hang up immediately as soon as the person you are talking to asks for money. Then relatives should be called on the known telephone number or the police on 110. Very important: Never give money or valuables to unknown people.
Police warn of shock call scam
The East Hesse Police Headquarters will receive information on (0661) 1050, as will any other police station. The online guard can also be notified.
The shock call is not the only case currently occupying the police in the region: A car worth 63,000 euros was recently stolen in Schlitz – the perpetrators probably used the so-called keyless go method.
