A new family doctor's practice opens in Schlitz on April 1st. The census would have Dr. Julian Dern almost threw a spanner in the works.
Schlitz – “From April 1st, my practice will welcome all patients – those with statutory or private insurance,” explains Dr. Julian Dern. After around a year and a half of renovation work in the listed Old Post Office The Schlitz native, a general practitioner, had the rooms on the ground floor comprehensively modernized and transformed into a contemporary family doctor's practice.
Shortly before the opening, things got exciting again: Due to the declining population according to the microcensus, the number of free general practitioner seats in the central Lauterbach area – which includes Schlitz – was reduced from 3.5 to just one. In addition to Dr. A colleague from a group practice in Lauterbach also applied for this position. The responsible approval committee ultimately decided on the Schlitz location.

“When the decision was made, it was an enormous relief for me,” reports Dern. At the same time, he emphasizes: “It is regrettable that my colleague has not been given her own seat. Family medical care is also strained in Lauterbach.” The Vogelsberg district had campaigned in advance for the allocation of two seats – but ultimately without success. “I really hope that a solution can be found for the colleague, for example about possible special needs.”
The need in the castle town is already clearly noticeable. “The number of inquiries in advance is very high,” reports Dern. “However, when the practice starts on April 1st, we will not be able to accept everyone interested at the same time.” The practice at Bahnhofstrasse 13 is also gradually growing in terms of staff: initially there are two medical assistants on the team, with two more to follow in the coming months. “Our goal is to be able to offer family doctor care to all patients who would like to entrust themselves to us. We ask for a little patience at the beginning.”
