Riccardo Basile calls Lothar Matthäus in the Hessentag conversation

The approximately hour-long conversation, moderated by FZ editor Johannes Götze, began at 7 p.m. The 34-year-old Basile was very happy to be back in his homeland and emphasized the close connection to the city of Fulda. He described this as a “health resort” where he was “cooked deliciously by his mother” and went for “long walks with the dog”.

This helps him to switch off from the otherwise stressful everyday life. This one has it all. Basile travels all over the country, whether to film his show “My Story”, as a field reporter in the Bundesliga or for talks with Oliver Kahn and Matthias Sammer.

The 34-year-old, who worked his way up from an intern at Sky to one of the best sports presenters As he himself says, he came to television by pure chance and was scared to death the first time he appeared in front of the camera. At an event in the Esperanto Hall he met commentator legend Marcel Reif.

He asked him straight up what he had to do to replace him. Reif seemed to like his directness and got him an internship at the station. Basile made it clear how grateful he was to Reif for everything. It was always important to be persistent, hardworking and friendly. Arrogance and snootyness don't get you anywhere.

Lothar Matthäus impressed by Riccardo Basile

The bakery chain “Marilena's Dolceria” had set up this with a good 70 branches. In the bakery it was normal to work 14 hours or more. He considers discussions about work-life balance and four-day weeks to be “total nonsense”.

Basile revealed a lot of personal information during the quick question rounds and chatted about life behind the scenes. So he gets up early, always drinks his Sambuca with three coffee beans and is a real Tatort fan. He has 2,413 contacts, many of them well-known. One of them is Lothar Matthäus, whom he even called at Götze's request.

When Matthew answered, many listeners were visibly astonished. Matthäus said on the phone: “It’s very impressive what Riccardo has achieved.” He now regularly goes on vacation with him and other stars like Boris Becker. At first it was difficult to achieve, he said.

He didn't want to commit to the final question about where he saw himself in five years. “A year ago I would never have thought I would have a talk with Oliver Kahn. It's all so fast-moving,” he said. But he is very interested in politics. After the conversation, Basile stayed at the stand for some time for selfies and questions from the audience.
