Poppenhausen – RhönEnergie has put six new charging points for electric vehicles into operation at the popular Grabenhöfchen hiking car park. Just in time for the start of the hiking season, the company is strengthening e-mobility in the Rhön – in a place that, like many hiking parking spaces in Germany, previously did not offer charging options.
E-mobility in the Rhön strengthened with six new charging points
The location on the B458 is at an altitude of 696 meters and serves as the starting point for several popular hiking trails. The technical connection could be implemented easily: a neighboring transformer station enabled the power supply without any major hurdles.
The new charging infrastructure includes a 50 kW direct current (DC) column for fast charging, which can distribute its power between two vehicles with 25 kW each if necessary. In addition, two alternating current (AC) columns with 22 kW each offer space for up to four vehicles at the same time with 11 kW each – ideal for hikers and guests who are traveling in the Rhön for a long time.
“Especially in popular excursion destinations, it becomes clear how important a well-developed charging infrastructure is,” said Florian Michaelis, head of e-mobility at RhönEnergie. “With the new charging points, we are enabling climate-friendly mobility exactly where it is needed.”
Poppenhausen focuses on sustainable mobility
Poppenhausen's mayor Alexandra Ballweg (independent) described the project as “an important step for sustainable mobility in the region”. Sustainable mobility is a crucial factor for the future, especially in conjunction with tourism.
Bernhard Schimetschka, owner of the RhönHotel Grabenhöfchen, also welcomed the new infrastructure: “Many guests have asked about charging options in the past. It is all the better that we can now offer this service directly on site.”
The project is supported by the Hessian Ministry of Economic Affairs as part of the “Promotion of Electromobility” funding program. The aim of the program is to promote the expansion of charging infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. Hessen Mobil provided the required space in an unbureaucratic manner.
The charging points in Poppenhausen are just one of several sustainability projects in the region: Construction of the largest solar park in the Fulda district recently began in Eichenzell.
