Josef Fritzl has long dreamed of spending his final years in freedom. But shortly before his 91st birthday, an incident occurs in his prison cell. The convicted incest perpetrator who held his daughter captive in the basement of his own home for 24 years has reportedly suffered a serious fall. His health is considered worrying.
Josef Fritzl has been serving his life sentence in Stein Prison since 2009. And there the almost 91-year-old is said to have had a serious fall in his cell. His lawyer Astrid Wagner confirmed to the Austrian news portal that Fritzl's health had generally deteriorated significantly: “He’s really not in a good place.” She has been trying for some time to place her client in a retirement home that specializes in dementia patients.
In 1984, Josef Fritzl locked his then 18-year-old daughter in the basement of his house in Amstetten. Over the next 24 years he raped her thousands of times and fathered seven children with her. One of them soon died. Fritzl was sentenced to life imprisonment in March 2009 for murder by omission, rape, deprivation of liberty, aggravated coercion, slavery and incest. He has since taken on a different name.
In 2024, the Fritzl regional court moved the prison from the prison system to the normal prison system at the Stein prison in Lower Austria. However, a request for early release was rejected. At the time, the court referred, among other things, to the perpetrator's high level of criminal energy and his lack of preparation for a life in freedom. However, his lawyer doesn't let up, although one received a conditional release from prison only last year was rejected again: “I made him a promise that he would be able to spend his last years in freedom. I will keep that promise.”
